If you have stopped on the hard shoulder

Get as far left as you can, wheels turned to the left, hazards on.
Everyone out of the nearside doors and behind the barrier, up the bank if there is one.
On a smart motorway section with no hard shoulder, use an emergency area if you can reach one. If you cannot, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999 first.
Then call us on 0161 399 0425 with your location marker or the nearest junction number.

National Highways ask that you report any live-lane breakdown to them or the police before arranging recovery. We will work with them on arrival.
